Virginia Salutes Civil War Sesquicentennial

cannon_500Although it remains one the darkest periods in our history, the American Civil War had an unquestionable and lasting influence on our nation. Few regions of the country were as embroiled in this savage dispute as Virginia, where some of the most integral battles and campaigns were fought. The social and political effects of the war contributed significantly to the growth and development of the USA in the ensuing decades, and now 150 years later we celebrate the commencement of the War Between The States.

Throughout Virginia and neighboring states, battle reenactments and unique events are being organized to mark the Civil War sesquicentennial. Visitors can relive history through tours of key battle sites, attend special museum exhibitions and a whole range of exciting programs devised to educate and entertain.

Among the most pivotal battles of the war was the First Battle of Bull Run, which took place in Prince William County on 21 July 1861. To acknowledge this momentous historical milestone, a major series of events, memorials and activities will be taking place in and around the city of Manassas, Virginia. As part of the schedule spectators can enjoy a Civil War Military Parade, Manassas Blue and Gray Ball, Civil War Baseball Tournament and of course a huge-scale, detailed reenactment of the battle itself involving 1000s of participants.

During the next four years, in keeping with the timeline of the American Civil War, there will be numerous events and developments taking place around the country, in recognition of the sesquicentennial. These will include dedicated exhibitions at two new major institutions; The African American Civil War Memorial Museum and National Museum of Civil War Medicine. The Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington D.C. will host a significant collection of Civil War artworks, including paintings and vintage photographs.

Wherever one lives in the USA, the impact of the American Civil War has helped shape the way we live today, and it is sobering to reflect on the sacrifices made by so many during this turbulent period of American history.
