Canada: Counting the counters of the 2011 census
Canada Watch
Earlier this month, the Federal government began the hiring process related to the 2011 census. This exercise involves thousands of temporary workers to conduct address canvassing and follow-up. During the various phases, the temporary and intermittent nature of the work can result in significant changes in monthly employment estimates, particularly during the spring of the census year. As today’s Hot Chart shows, the big jump to Census employment will occur in May with a boost of 32,000 jobs. Despite the fact that length of employment could vary by assignment, we expect the bulk of the drawdown to occur in August. This will be important to keep in mind when interpreting the Canadian employment reports.
